There are three stages in the project construction development.
Design work and non-substantial construction
Detailed design began in September 2006 with Abigroup's consultants working on specialist aspects. Sinclair Knight Mertz (SKM) is undertaking the engineering design; EDAW Gillespie is developing the detailed urban design and landscaping plans; and Bassett Acoustics is preparing the noise and vibration management plan. The first phase of the design process was to finalise the precise vertical and horizontal alignment of the road and consider road alignment, corridor boundaries, level constraints, and clearance requirements. Geotechnical field work commenced in the January 2007.
The first steps or non-substantial construction, incorporate such things as installing site boundary fencing, undertaking site survey, test drilling/test excavations associated with geotechnical investigations, building and road pre-construction surveys, clearing of vegetation and other associated works. In addition, the project site office and compounds are being established to provide office space and plant and equipment storage areas for the duration of the project construction phase.
Substantial construction
Substantial construction began in March 2007 and involves heavy plant and machinery, traffic changes, drainage, earthworks, pavement construction and the start of bridge construction. At all times, Abigroup and the RTA ensure that the people who are likely to be directly affected are informed as soon as possible.
Handover and maintenance
The project is currently scheduled for completion in late 2009. Abigroup is contracted to maintain the upgrade on behalf of the RTA for 10 years from the date of construction completion.
